October has long been known as the month of Halloween, but in 1985 it became known for something much more meaningful and personal: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Then, in 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation began giving out pink ribbons to breast cancer survivors who ran the NYC Race for Breast Cancer Survivors, adding an iconic color for a month which has come to mean so much to so many.
Whether you’re an annual participant in the fight against breast cancer, or if this is your first time participating in raising awareness for this important cause, keep reading to discover five ways that you can get involved and make a difference:
1) Walk or run for the cause
During the month of October walks, runs, and marathons are held in virtually every state with the intention of raising donations and awareness for breast cancer research.
You don’t need to be a breast cancer survivor, or even be terribly physically fit, to participate. Just register early and start asking your friends and family to sponsor you on your walk or run, and try to get as many people as you can to participate with you. Not only is it more fun to fundraise together, but the more people you involve, the further the message of breast cancer awareness will spread.
2) Wear pink
Pink ribbons have been the symbol of breast cancer awareness since 1991, but if wearing a pink ribbon isn’t your thing then don’t worry: there are lots of ways that you can show your support by including a little pink in your life.
As the years have passed clothing, necklaces, makeup items, bags, accessories, pillows, and much more have become widely available in the signature National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Pink. So even if wearing a pink t-shirt doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are still lots of pink items you can purchase to show your support and donate to the fight against cancer.
3) Cheer on your NFL Team
The NFL has partnered with the American Cancer Society to create a campaign called “A Crucial Catch” which is designed to raise awareness to sports fans all across the country.
During the month of October players, referees, and coaches will wear various kinds of pink apparel including helmets, jerseys, gloves, and more, in support of breast cancer awareness. Then, at the end of the month, these items will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
4) Donate your locks
One of the most challenging parts of going through treatment for breast cancer is losing your hair, and many women struggle with self-esteem issues at this point in their treatment.
If you’re feeling bold, you can sign up to donate your hair to be made into a wig for cancer patients. A few inches of hair may not seem like a lot to you, but to someone battling cancer it can make a world of difference.
5) Spread the word
Speak to the women in your life about the importance of breast self-exams, and of scheduling annual breast cancer screenings. Early detection can mean life or death in some cases, so it’s important to speak to the women you know about breast cancer awareness.
